The Selflessness of Clouds

How they notice me burning
beneath the noon sun,
how they gather in multitudes,
arriving in peace to declare:

we will stand before the fire,
we will burn,
so you don’t have to.

I—who can never repay them,
I—who will forget by nightfall.
